When ac installation makes sense

Installation and replacement decisions are usually about comfort, reliability, and operating cost. The right plan depends on how your current system is performing now, not just its age.

  • The current system is aging, unreliable, or facing another expensive repair.
  • Energy bills keep climbing while comfort stays uneven from room to room.
  • You want a cleaner, quieter, more efficient setup before peak season hits.

Service details

The overview below explains how this service works, common problems we see, and what Sacramento homeowners should expect before scheduling.

With Sacramento summers regularly pushing 100°F+ and heat waves hitting 110°F, a properly sized, high-efficiency air conditioner isn't a luxury — it's essential. PULSE HVAC has installed hundreds of AC systems throughout the Sacramento area and knows exactly how to size and configure equipment for our climate.

Why Proper Sizing Matters in Sacramento

Sacramento's extreme summer heat means your air conditioner works harder than almost anywhere else in California. An undersized unit runs constantly and never catches up on the hottest days. An oversized unit short-cycles — turning on and off too frequently — which wastes energy, creates humidity problems, and stresses the compressor.

PULSE always performs a Manual J load calculation before recommending equipment. We size your AC to your home, not to your neighbor's or to a general square-footage rule.

High-Efficiency AC Brands We Install

We are authorized installers for:

  • Carrier — Performance and Infinity series (up to 26 SEER)
  • Lennox — XC21 and Dave Lennox Signature series (up to 28 SEER)
  • Trane — XV20i and XR17 series
  • Rheem — Classic and Prestige series
  • Goodman — GSX16 and GSXC18 series

All installations are permitted, inspected, and backed by manufacturer warranty plus PULSE's installation warranty.

The Installation Process

  1. Load calculation and equipment selection
  2. Permit filing with Sacramento County or your city
  3. Installation day — remove old equipment, install new system, connect refrigerant lines
  4. Commissioning — verify refrigerant charge, airflow, and temperature split
  5. Rebate filing — we submit SMUD/PG&E paperwork on your behalf (see current SMUD rebates)
  6. Cleanup and walkthrough — we explain the new thermostat and filter schedule

What to Expect on Installation Day

Our crew typically arrives by 8 AM. Here's the typical day:

  • Morning: Remove old outdoor unit, pull electrical disconnect, vacuum refrigerant
  • Mid-morning: Install new condenser on pad or stand, connect refrigerant lines
  • Afternoon: Install/replace air handler if needed, connect electrical and controls, pull vacuum on refrigerant circuit
  • Late afternoon: Charge refrigerant to factory spec, verify airflow, measure temperature split at registers
  • End of day: Full walkthrough with homeowner — thermostat programming, filter location, and schedule, warranty card registration

We leave your home clean and your system running. Most installations are done by 4–5 PM.

Sacramento's Mandatory Efficiency Standards

California Title 24 requires that new AC installations meet minimum efficiency standards (currently 15 SEER2 for most Sacramento-area installations). All PULSE installations meet or exceed these requirements, and we only install equipment that qualifies for available utility rebates.

AC Installation — FAQs

A proper AC installation is the full replacement of the outdoor condenser, indoor evaporator coil, and refrigerant line set — not just swapping the outdoor unit. It includes a Manual J load calculation to size the system, a vacuum-and-charge of the refrigerant circuit to factory spec, a static-pressure test on the ductwork, a Title-24 commissioning report, and a city permit with final inspection. Anything less is a partial install that almost always shortens equipment life and voids the manufacturer warranty.

AC size is determined by a Manual J load calculation — not just square footage. Your home's insulation, window area, ceiling height, orientation, and the Sacramento climate all factor in. An oversized AC is actually worse than one that's too small — it short-cycles, doesn't dehumidify well, and wears out faster.

A standard AC installation (replacing just the outdoor unit and refrigerant lines) takes 4–6 hours. A full system installation including the indoor air handler takes 6–8 hours. We typically complete everything in a single day.

For Sacramento, we generally recommend 16–20 SEER. Higher SEER costs more upfront but saves money over time — Sacramento's long, hot summers mean your AC runs a lot. At current electricity rates, a 20 SEER system pays back the premium over a 16 SEER system in 4–7 years.

SMUD offers rebates for qualifying high-efficiency central AC installations in its service territory. Current amounts are listed at https://www.smud.org/Rebates-and-Savings-Tips/Rebates-for-My-Home/Heating-and-Cooling-Rebates. PULSE files all rebate paperwork on your behalf. PG&E territory (Roseville, Rocklin, Davis, Woodland, Placerville, El Dorado Hills) has separate rebate programs through PG&E's residential energy-efficiency portal — we handle that paperwork too.

Yes. We offer financing for AC installation projects with terms ranging from 12 to 120 months through established HVAC-financing partners. Approval decisions are typically same-day, and the application is a soft credit check. We present financing options alongside cash pricing at the estimate so you can compare net monthly cost.

Yes. California Title 24 Part 6 (Building Energy Efficiency Standards) sets minimum equipment efficiency and requires specific commissioning steps on every new AC installation — including refrigerant charge verification, duct leakage testing in some cases, and HERS registration. All PULSE installations meet or exceed Title 24 requirements and include the required commissioning documentation.
